Hello! It's been so long since I've written, sorry for that! I suppose it's a good thing, because it means Anto and I have been keeping busy and seizing opportunities as they present themselves. I'm currently enjoying a relaxing Sunday night and thought this would be a perfect time for an update.
The days in Tuen Mun are so lovely lately. The cold is starting to lift and the sun shines a little brighter and a little longer each day. And those pink and purple sunsets I love so much are back. Feeling very happy today, got to enjoy a creative day by playing music, singing songs, writing, drawing and cooking a good meal. Some of my favourite things! It was a busy weekend of shows and birthday parties so today's task of rejuvenation was a great success!
Anto's parents will be coming to Hong Kong in early April and we are going to spend a couple weeks in Japan together! I am soo excited. I have always wanted to go to Japan. Two of my brothers spent years living there, and one even got married to my awesome sister-in-law there. We are going during cherry blossom season too which worked out perfectly! Can't wait to experience all that beauty and everyone out celebrating and feeling good. We'll get to split our time between Tokyo and Osaka so we'll be able to see so much while we're there. There's even a Disney Land and Universal Studios...I can't resist! We'll get back to HK the end of April and the days will be even warmer then. Time is moving so fast it seems. I can't believe it's already February 2015!
Hmm what else is new...Oh! I randomly became a co-host of a live talk show here in Hong Kong. Anto and I were asked to be guests one night. We had such a blast, the other two female hosts asked me to join the team! It's been great, it's the one day a week you have to be completely present. You can't be spacing out, tidying up, or checking your phone...you're on live television! It's such a rush actually. We have a lot of fun just talking and learning from our guests and each other. But on the other hand it's silly and ridiculous, and there are usually drinks involved. This last Friday we had on UFO experts so you know I was way too excited! I'm super into all that so it was fun to pick the brains of a couple special guests that came all the way from space just to talk to us hehe We also did a Flashback Friday show where we got to show old pictures and tell stories of our childhoods and awkward teens. Such good fun! The show is called You Can't Sit With Us and it's on Friday nights live at 8pm (hk time → 7am in canada) on www.lowjoke.com
We have been expanding into and exploring other artistic performance scenes here this year. Since Anto was asked to help organize a monthly variety show with Comedy HK, we have been trying to scope out different acts to really showcase different arts and bring together performers and audiences who normally wouldn't be at the same place. It has been great getting more into the storytelling scene. That was always my favourite at home. I loved going to storytelling shows, hearing tales of moments in people's lives, all the emotions, the humour, the characters, the learning. Mmm, I love it all. It captivates me. We have also met some fun poets and musicians too and I can't wait to meet more and give them new opportunities to share! The show is called The Varietea Party and we just had our first one on January 31st. It was packed! I have never seen so many people at the Brew House before. It was wild! Standing room only. There is a blog here called Sassy Hong Kong. When we arrived, I read it all the time, it's super popular and covers everything and anything in Hong Kong. Randomly a couple days before the event, we found out they were promoting the show! They even sent it out in their newsletter. I asked so many of the people that showed up how they heard about it, and they said, of course, from Sassy. It was just amazing! Thank you to the powers that be that orchestrated such an awesome turn out. We are looking forward to the next show on March 7th, celebrating the end of Chinese New Year! I have had the opportunity to hand draw the show posters too. You can see them on my website www.beawesome.co/blog
Also been keeping busy volunteering at Crossroads. Last week we closed down the entire fair trade market place for the annual stock take. Oh. My. Gosh. All I can say is: 4 people, 16 hours, 15,000 items. It was insanity. On the second day, my partner had to leave early, and I would have been left scanning through the thousands by myself...except I have the best boyfriend ever! As soon as I told him my partner was bouncing, he woke up and hopped on the bus to help! It was so fun having him there, experiencing the people and the fun I get to contribute to every week. It was so sweet of him to show up and save the day like that. My manager even bought him chocolate! I loved all the scanning too. It's nerdy I know, but it reminds me of when I was a kid and I would pretend the TV remote was a scanner and I'd play library and store. Good times. I was super proud of everyone though for working together over those two long days, and still managing to have so much fun through it all. Oh, the fair trade cafe next door helped ;) They make a mean decaf soy milk latte. Just sayin'.
We have been spending quite a bit of time dog sitting for our friend Nick as well. He has a husky named Ghost and he is such a handsome dog. We first dog sat in the new year, and Ghost was very 'close to Anto but didn't want anything to do with me. Which was so sad, I have so much love to give to animals! And never met a dog that didn't want love and affection. But it was so sweet to see Anto caring for an animal like that. When we met in college he couldn't stand pets! Now he loves my cat like it's his own and wants to get a dog. So awesome! Anyway, the other week we were dog sitting again and this time around Ghost was a big suck. Let me give him so much love, it was so nice! I miss him already, but we will be there at the end of this week for a few days again. I miss all my animal family at home but having Ghost around helps!
Well that's all for now. Hope everyone at home is staying warm and enjoying the excuse to stay inside, play games, watch movies, eat good food and be awesome together. Miss you all and thank you to everyone for reading! Love you so much.
