What an amazing night last night! From what I learned is that people are requesting more of my extremely long posts, so here it is...
I've done roasts before, just as many mean and funny things were being said, but this time I could feel the actual love in the air. Everyone was able to call eachother on our shit, and then hug at the end of the night... Huge shoutouts to the Roasters for putting yourselves out there, really killed it. No idea if anyone is holding any secret grudges but on this end I'm feeling awesome! The best part is that if anyone is pissed at me, I have a hiatus from the scene... unlike the rest of you suckers who have to live with eachother everyday bahahah (evil laugh)
Usually people talk about the high's and lows of travelling, but I honestly can't say the lows are even close to the highs that I have felt because of the comedy scene out here. People were so damn funny last night, telling me I don't know how to write a joke without Jen, I have the body and dress sense of a butch lesbian and how I should be on a train to 1945 Auschwitz with my gay buttons. GOT REAL! I didn't even come close to getting the worst of it. We felt everything from cringing, to applauding, to straight-up mean, but it all led to some real, hilarious moments.
Wish my friends out there could have seen the looks on people's faces when they were being burned. So many people came out just to hear us make fun of eachother relentlessly, all so specific and detailed, it was beautiful... The camaraderie that is this Comedy.HK scene is something so special. I was happy to see that it pushed everyone on the dais to step up and do something fresh, in-the-moment and brilliant. We forget sometimes, doing our same jokes all the time why we started comedy, and nights like last night are why we do this. There's something so special about Roasts and how the jokes bond us all together.
Couldn't believe that Dorsher was working on his Birthday! What a guy... it's his birthday yet he was there honouring me. So typical of him, always giving the spotlight to other people... Even when we brought him out a cake and started singing happy birthday, he was like "what's this bullshit, we here to ROAST" hahaha
Jen even went up at had a killer set! She roasted me and the rest of the dais pretty damn well and got applause breaks too. It's hard to admit cause after having a whole night for me, my ego is through the roof, but she had a better set than I did! I'm so proud of her, and combined with the last time she shared a poem on my birthday, I feel like the luckiest dude in the world to have her being herself, by my side.
So many special people came out too and I could take a week to give appreciation. I've learned over the years how to take a joke, it's a slow and continuing process. It was such a great practice to be in front of so many people seeing how you react to shit being dropped on yo face. I definately think this went alot better than the last time I tried to do a roast when I was at the Ottawa Comedy awards! That was a huge bombfest lol So thank you for the mulligan, Hong Kong. You've been a rebirth of sorts out here, really reminding me how much I love comedy and the meaning of building a supportive, appreciative community that has a great sense of humour.
Hopefully we get to come back and visit sometime soon, and we could be honouring someone else for their roast. As blessed as I feel right now, there's so many people who have given just as much or more to the comedy scene here. They should should be reminded of their amazing contributions through insults about their well-being, jabs at their terrible physical appearance and revealing personal secrets that you thought were confidential, all in hilarious fashion.
So there you have it, another "long-ass awful post about nothing" as it was called yesterday hahaha but this is just who I am! I am a walking long-ass post, but I disagree about the nothing part, there's so much value to giving appreciation and this is just my avenue to share these thanks.
So I have a couple more shows before I head back to Canada. Very interesting how everyone wants to throw shows at you when you're leaving, I should just tell everyone I'm always leaving whatever city I'm in, and I'll get more shows! Tonight I'll be hitting the stage at XXX for a hip-hop show called Unity Jam HK w/ Ekorb. Super stoked for tomorrow night's Varietea Party, and I'll be hosting the Brewhouse open mic next wednesday too, so come round for spots.
I am definately looking forward to coming home to Ottawa and Toronto next week, but don't worry, I'm not expecting a Roast when I arrive, just some good ol' fashion hangtime!
