Well its been a rainy couple days here in Hong Kong, with the level 8 typhoon and all...but that hasn't stopped us from doing some light exploration!
Yes, I said typhoon! This was our first time experiencing something like that. Last night, we were on our way home from an open mic downtown, when it started up. The winds were insanely strong, knocking garbage bins off the sidewalks, breaking branches clean off of trees onto the roads, and blowing my bangs in the wrong direction – how rude! In times like this, they will sometimes stop bus service as the winds are too powerful for the double-decker buses they have here, so we were definitely lucky to catch the night's last bus home. It was raining so hard we could barely see the road ahead of us. When we could, the wind was blowing the rain so strongly in a sweeping motion as it hit the road, it was unlike anything I had seen before. So eerie! We made it to our stop safely and lucky for us the rain stopped long enough for us to get home. And lucky for all the working folk, they were all given a half-day today and most kids had the day off school. Here are our typhoon glamour shots :P

Our favourite part about random exploration is that although you have no idea where you're going, you always end up where you need to be, finding fun things along the way. Definitely the coolest thing I saw this week was a snail. I know what you're thinking, what's so exciting about seeing a snail on a rainy day? Well... this snail was HUGE! Biggest snail I have ever seen in my life, it blew my mind! I never knew they could get so big, does this mean there could be even bigger ones? I need to do some snail research...
We hadn't used the light rail in our neighbourhood yet, so one day, we decided to take it to a random stop and continue the rainy journey. We found a random mall, which isn't that difficult here because they're everywhere! There are so many funny signs and random products here in Hong Kong, we have to share a few. From placenta face masks and peanut butter hamburgers, to stores that keep everything in plastic and offer their clothes in up to size XXXXXXXXL. Which is probably only a Canadian medium, by the way. Even as a girl with a shoe size of 8, I have to get the largest size shoe here. Anything above that and you're out of luck!
One thing that has been tricky here is finding places to eat out at that accommodate both my vegetarian, gluten-free lifestyle, and Anto's carnivorous, gluten-filled diet! It tends to be either one or the other. But tonight we lucked out. We were down on Hong Kong Island for a show at Take Out Comedy Club and we found a Thai restaurant across the street called Soho Spice that both of us could enjoy a delicious meal. There is hope for us yet! I had deep fried tofu in red curry with green onions and fresh sprouts with a side of ginger and turmeric rice, while Anto enjoyed a hearty helping of thai beef with fat rice noodles, veggies and sprouts. So happy, ho hoy sum!
Its been a fun and relaxing couple days of adventuring and enjoying some quiet time at home. It also gave us lots of time to plan some upcoming events. Later this week we will go to Ocean Park, which is a huge theme park, much like Canada's Wonderland. That should be a fun reward after all these rainy days! Next week, we planned a 3-day trip to Macau, which we are really looking forward to. Anto will be playing in a poker tournament there too, which is like a dream for anyone who enjoys gambling! So proud of him! For myself, I am looking forward to cheering him on and seeing the sights of Macau and Taipa village. Apparently, it is so small you can get almost everywhere by foot. You can also rent a bike to get around a little faster, which is good for us because there are already a lot of things on the list to see while we're there :)
